Low surface energy materials such as polypropylene and polyethylene often exhibit poor adhesion. Most issues are not due to incorrect adhesive selection, but rather overlooked surface treatment steps.
Cleaning is the first step.
Mold release agents, oil stains, and dust can directly compromise bond integrity. We recommend using an appropriate cleaning method to remove contaminants and ensure the surface is fully dry before applying adhesive.
Roughening and Treatment Agents
Moderate surface finishing on select materials increases bonding area. When used with a specialized surface treatment agent, adhesion for difficult-to-bond materials is further enhanced. Bonding must be applied within the effective time frame after treatment.
Recommended approach
Confirm surface treatment processes and bonding parameters during the small-batch sampling phase, document them in a written process card, and then proceed to mass production to reduce post-launch adjustment costs.
